President Kovind releases Rs 10 & Rs 1000 commemorative coin on Lord Jagannath

Puri: President Ram Nath Kovind released Rs 10 and Rs 1000 commemorative coins on Nabakalebar festival of Lord Jagannath on the second day of his Odisha visit on Sunday.

President Kovind released the commemorative coins during the centenary celebration of Rastriya Sanskrit Sansthan here.

First Lady Savita Kovind, Odisha Governor Dr S.C Jamir, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Jual Oram, Odisha Higher Education Minister Ananta Das, Puri King Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb and others were present during the ceremony.

In a bid to mark the symbolic recreation of sibling deities including Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and devi Subhadra, the Union Government had earlier announced to release the Rs 10 and Rs 1,000 denominations coins.

The President earlier visited Puri Srimandir to seek blessings of Lord Jagannath. He mentioned about a temple priest showing him evidence of his father’s visit to Puri Srimandir on Oct 9, 1947 when he was around 1-2 years old. “I am fortunate to visit here and have darshan of Lord Jagannath in Puri where my father had visited in 1947,” he said.

The President also spoke about the contribution of Jayee Rajguru, who was martyred while fighting against British rule and the legendary figures including Pandit Gopabandhu Das and Nilakantha Das.

Notably, it is Kovind’s first official visit to the state after his election as President. In his two day visit, he is scheduled to grace several programme in the state.
