108-AmbulanceKatni: In a heart-wrenching incident, a pregnant woman walked around 20 km and delivered a baby girl on the road, who died soon after birth, as the ambulance failed to reach her village in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

The hapless woman, Beena, a resident of Barmani village in the district, suffered labour pain last night. Her family members called the 108 ambulance service in order to take her to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Barhi town, over 20 km away from their village.

Since the ambulance did not reach the village, Beena and her husband decided to reach the CHC by walking.

The couple managed to reach the town by walking but on their way to the CHC,  Beena delivered a baby girl on the road near a police station. However, the new born died soon after the delivery.

Her family members told media persons that the new-born baby died as she fell on the hard surface.

The government ordered an inquiry probe into the mishap.

Janani Express, also known as 108 ambulance service, has been launched to promote institutional delivery among the poor pregnant women.
