Rayagada: Demolishing the tall claims made by the government on maternal and childcare in the State, a pregnant woman was carried on a bamboo raft across the swelling river Kalyani in the district to reach Kalyansinghpur Hospital on Friday.
According to reports, the expecting mother from Purunabhatt village in the flood affected district experienced labour pain this morning and needed immediate shifting to nearby hospital located at Kalyansinghpur. But as the only bridge connecting the village to Kalyansinghpur over river Kalyani has been washed away in the recent flood, some youths made her cross the river on a bamboo raft. One ASHA worker also accompanied the patient.
The incident has sparked sharp reaction among the locals in the area who are blaming administrative apathy for the incident.
