Pregnant woman carried on stretcher in Odisha

Nuapada: An expectant mother was carried on a stretcher for about five kilometres due to the absence of a motorable road for ambulance to reach her village.

According to reports, Jugni Majhi, the wife of Paramananda Majhi of Kapoorgarh village under Khariar block of the district, complained of labour pain this morning following which her family member called the local Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Anganwadi worker to help her.

The ASHA worker called an ambulance from the Khariar Community Health Centre to take Jugni to the hospital. However, the emergency vehicle could not reach the village due to poor road.

Finding no means, the health workers and relatives of Jugni carried her on a stretcher for about five kilometres to reach the road from where she was rushed to the Community Health Centre for treatment.

The locals, meanwhile, expressed their displeasure over the matter and reiterated their longstanding demand of a concrete road to the village so as to avoid such incidents in future.
