pregnant womanRayagada: In yet another incident that speaks volumes about the plight of pregnant women in far-off districts of the State, another woman was carried to the Kalyansinghpur Community Health Centre (CHC) on the shoulders of her family members on Tuesday morning

The shameful incident occurred after the woman from Fakedi village under Kalyansinghpur block felt labour pain this morning. Finding that no ambulance was available to shift her to the nearby hospital, her family members made a carriage on their own using a bamboo stick and saree and carried the woman to Kalyansinghpur CHC on foot after crossing River Nagabali.

But all the efforts of the family member went in vein as the woman gave birth to a stillborn girl child on her way to the CHC.

Talking to media over the issue, an ASHA worker engaged at the CHC said despite her continuous efforts to make people aware on safe motherhood initiatives available at the health facility, villagers are bringing pregnant women to the hospital in time. They are bringing the pregnant women to the hospital only in emergency giving rise to this type of situation. The situation could have been averted had the woman been shifted to the CHC earlier, she said.
