Pre-activated SIM card fraud case: Crime Branch arrests 3 more accused persons

Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police has arrested three more persons for their involvement in the pre-activated SIM card fraud case.

The CID Cyber P.S has arrested three more accused persons in this case raising the total Number of accused persons arrested to nine.

Those arrested today are Prakash Chandra Sahoo of Takera village in Nayagarh district residing at Tamando of Bhubaneswar working as Territorial Sales Manager of Vodafone-Idea, Santanu Kumar Sahoo of Adhanga Malikesharpur in Kendrapara district who is residing at Tangi of Khurda working as Territoroial Sales Executive of Vodafone-Idea and Umakanta Mohanty of Dubagadia village of Jajpur district who was serving as Territorial Sales Manager of Vodafone-Idea but recently disengaged.

They all, admittedly, were activating multiple extra SIMs with most of the D-KYC genuine activations and in this process those extra pre-activated bulk SIMs were being supplied to prime accused Dusmanta Sahu of Nadiali Village through Gyanaranjan Sahoo(already arrested) who used to sell OTP facilitating downloading of different Apps in foreign mobile sets and again after three months getting those SIMs ported to other Service Providers.

Cyber Cell of Crime Branch had seized 19641 SIMs , Cash of Rs. 14,32,892/- Recharge Vouchers- 247 Nos, Mobile Handsets- 48 Nos with accessories, Voter I.Card- 394 Nos etc. and other incriminating articles on 30.04.2022 from the possession of accused persons namely, (1) Sai Prakash Das (38), S/o Prashant Kumar Das, Dhenkanal Town, Dhenkanal, (2) Avinash Nayak (32), S/o Pratap Ch. Nayak, At- Jagannath Road, Meena Bazar, Dhenkanal, (3) Dushmant Kumar Sahu (23), S/o Binod Kumar Sahu of Vill- Nadiali, PS- Sadar, Dist- Dhenkanal. All the three accused persons were arrested on May 1 and had been forwarded earlier. Cyber team had also freezed several other bank accounts of prime accd. Dusmanta having cumulative balance of about Rs. 10 lakhs.

In subsequent dates CID CB had arrested other co-accused persons namely Dolagobinda Parida- ‘Promoter’ of Jio on 06.05.2022, Deepak Ku. Nayak- Territorial Sales Manager of Airtel on 10.05.2022 and Gyanaranjan Sahoo on 13.05.2022 who had already been forwarded and in interim Judicial custody. With today’s arrest, the total arrest figure in this case is raised to nine and these three accused. Persons are being forwarded to the court of JMFC, Cuttack City today.

As ascertained so far, this group has also got complicity in similar crimes registered with Delhi Police and Kerala Police.

The investigation is in progress.
