Pratibha Ray elevated as Chairperson of Bharatiya Jnanpith Selection Board

Bhubaneswar: Eminent Odia litterateur Padma Shri Pratibha Ray has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Bharatiya Jnanpith Selection Board.

Ray, who has been conferred with Jnanpith Award in 2011 for his tremendous contribution to the Odia literature, was earlier working as a member of the Board.

Ray is also the first Odia woman and fourth Odia writer to get the Jnanpith Award. The other winners were Gopinath Mohanty (1973), Sachidananda Routray (1986) and Sitakant Mohapatra (1993).

In addition to Jnanpith Award, Ray is also having the privilege of being the first woman writer to receive the prestigious National Moortidevi Award by Bharatiya Jnanpith for the year 1991 for her ageless creation ‘Yajnaseni’. Earlier in 1990, she had clinched ‘Sarala Award’ for the same novel.

Born in Balikuda of Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha, Ray is the daughter of well-known poet Parshuram Das. She penned her first novel ‘Barsa Basanta Baishakha’ in 1974. Her other popular creations are, ‘Aranya’ (1977), ‘Nishidha Prithivi’ (1978) ‘Parichya’ (1979), Punyatoya (1979), Meghamedura, (1980), ‘Ashabari’ ( 1980), ‘Ayamarambha’ (1981), ‘Nilatrishna’ (1981) and last but not the least ‘Samudrara Swara’ (1982).
