Power cut in Bhubaneswar amid scorching heat wave fumes residents

The frequent power cuts during daytime in Bhubaneswar have added to the woes of the people with no signs of respite.

Bhubaneswar: At a time when the entire State is reeling under intense heat wave condition, the frequent power cuts during daytime in Bhubaneswar have added to the woes of the people with no signs of respite.

According to the report of the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD), the State Capital City sizzled at 41.4 degree Celsius by 2.30 PM today and a 5-hour power cut doubled the miseries of the people especially in Ekamra Vihar area.

The unannounced power cut caused massive difficulties to the people especially those who have newborns, kids, sick and elderly people at homes. They said that there was power cut between 9 AM and 1 PM.

After waiting for an hour following power cut at around 9 AM, several residents made phone calls to the electricity office situated at Xavier Square with the aim to inquiry about the disruption of the electricity supply. But every caller was told that the power supply was cut for maintenance works and will be restored only by 1 PM.

“The electricity supply was snapped around 9 AM today. We were not told about it. It is too difficult to bear the scorching heat wave conditions. If the maintenance was needed, the work could have been done in the early morning or before 10 AM when the weather is cool a bit,” said one Bipin Nayak, a resident of Ekamra Vihar.

Adding to Nayak another resident named Asha Singh said, “Small children are there at homes. Some families have even newborn babies. As we live in asbestos houses, it becomes too difficult to stay inside the house even by 10 AM. In such situation, there are frequent disruptions of electricity supply. This increases our problems. The small children cry as they cannot tolerate the severe heatwaves.”

“The State government should keep its promise as it had announced that there will not be power cuts during the summer. It such long-hour of power cuts continues, we will be forced to hit the street,” she threatened.
