Cuttack: Hours after Odisha Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Minister Surya Narayan Patro said that Cuttack city potato wholesalers are not allowed to stock above 500 quintals each, the district Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare officials conducted raids at different potato godowns and shops today.

A five-member team of the Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare officials conducted raids and checked the stocked quantities of the potatoes. They also visited some shops of potato traders to find out the price of potato in the daily market. The investigating team asked the traders not to sell potato in high price.

Patro had earlier today said that each wholesaler of Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Puri cities have been permitted a limit stock of 350 quintals each while wholesalers of other cities and towns have been allowed a limit of 150 quintals each.

Likewise, Food Supplies Commissioner-cum-Secretary V.V. Yadav, in a fax message circulated to all District Collectors on May 7, said, “Keep a close watch on the availability and arrival of potato in the market and ensure availability of the same to the consumers at a reasonable price. If required, action may be taken against the hoarders and unscrupulous traders under the provision of Essential Commodities Act, 1955.”

“The Collectors of the border districts are requested to ensure that flow of potato from the producing States to the State of Odisha is not disrupted,” the Food Supplies Commissioner-cum-Secretary instructed.

The Collectors also have been instructed to intimate the Department on regular basis about the action taken in the matter.
