Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police today clarified that they are yet to impose heavy penalty under the amended MV Act which came into effect from September 1.

Police commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi said that so far they have penalized as many as 1113 violators between September 1 and September 5 in Bhubaneswar.

“Except for two incidents we have not penalized anyone with a penalty of more than Rs 1000. Two violators have so far been penalized Rs 5000 each for driving while using mobile phones. However we will be tough against drunken driving,” said Sarangi.

The police commissioner also said that they will continue with the awareness drive in the city. “Our aim is not to generate revenue by penalizing offenders. We are also aware of the hardship faced by people to get their vehicles tested for pollution. We have not penalized anyone for not having a PUC certificate so far,” added Sarangi.
