Police Empowered To Arrest Drunken Drivers In Odisha From Tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy has asked Police DG B.K Sharma to ensure collection of enhanced fines under the motor vehicles (amendment) bill 2019 from tomorrow.

Tripathy has also asked to arrest drunken drivers under the new rule. As per the new rules motorcycle riders, who now pay Rs 100 fine for not wearing helmet, will hence cough up Rs 1000 under the amended law. Driving without licence may cost Rs 5000 fine whereas drunk driving will attract a penalty of Rs 10000.  

“It is already instructed to shift the present mode of manual enforcement to e-challan in case of police officials. Transport Department will provide 500 machines in the first instance and integrate with VAHAN and SAARATHI application. This may be implemented early,” read a letter of the Chief Secretary to the Police DG.
