Police ASI arrested for raping minor girl student in Odisha

Bargarh: Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Sohela police station Banmali Kuanr was on Monday arrested by the police on charges of raping a Class 10th girl student a couple of days ago.

Kuanr was on the run after Bargarh SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamo had suspended Kuanr following the rape allegation against him.

“The incident took place in Melchhamunda police limits. As per a case registered under Section 363, 366, 376 of IPC and POSCO Act against Kuanr, he has been arrested. He will be forwarded to the court today,” informed Bhamo.

“Apart from suspending him from his job, I have directed the DSP and Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) for a departmental investigation. Stringent action will be taken against him after the completion of the probe,” he added.

According to reports, a youth named Kaibalya Nag alias Riku had kidnapped the minor girl while she was going to Tunugapali for tuition. He then sheltered the girl in the rented house of the ASI with his permission and raped her forcefully. Later, he abandoned the girl by locking her in the house. Sometime later, pretending to help her, Kuanr took the girl to his official residence and allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The victim’s parents, after learning about the matter, had filed a police complaint, following which Nag was arrested earlier and now the ASI.
