New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: After Mahanadi row with Chhattisgarh, Odisha suffered yet another disappointment in the hands of Centre on Thursday after the latter supported Andhra Pradesh’s stance in Polavarm issue by means of an affidavit submitted in the apex court.

In its response to the apex court in a plea filed by Odisha Government in Polavaram case, the Centre claimed that the Indira Sagar Polavaram Project on river Godavari in Andhra Pradesh is fulfilling all criteria to be a national project and hence would continue. Supporting the construction of the project Centre also argued in the court to dispose the original suit filed in the case by Odisha Government. It said the multi-purpose irrigation project does not violate any law.

In more surprise for the State, Centre also disqualified Odisha’s argument that the project will submerge a sizeable area in the Malkangiri district once it gets completed. It also questioned Odisha Government’s right to protest the project.

Arguing in support of the Centre’s reply in the court BJP leader Subhash Chouhan in his reaction to Kalinga TV kept a similar view and said Odisha Government is doing politics in the issue and trying to take political mileage in the inter-state water dispute.

“Odisha Government is trying to stretch the Polavaram issue long to get political mileage. The project is a legitimate one under Article 131 of the constitution,” said Chouhan.
