Bhubaneswar: PM Modi recently wrote a personal letter to ace hockey player Olympian Birendra Lakra from Odisha praising him for his ‘indelible contributions to Indian hockey’.
Lakra posted the letter on his Facebook and conveyed his ‘hearfelt thanks’ to the PM. Lakra wrote, “We athletes contribute our life to sport and when it is acknowledged by Hon’ble PM of the country, it feels like we have really done our bit for nation building. Heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Narendra Modi ji for his warm gesture. The time spent with you at the interaction after Tokyo 2020 will always remain memorable. Sir, I will surely take up the suggestion made by you regarding visits to 75 schools as part of #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav and continue to contribute to my country in my own little way.”
In the letter PM Modi expressed his gratitude to Lakra for his indelible contributions to Indian hockey. He wrote, “You have been a key part of a vital decade for Indian hockey. You also continued the glorious tradition of Odisha of producing outstanding hockey players, particularly defenders.”
Recalling his meet with the hockey connoisseur the PM wrote, “When I had met you, and the rest of the Tokyo 2020 contigent, I had urged you all to strengthen India’s Amrit Mahotsav by visiting various schools or colleges by August 2023. I had requested you all to do so in order to spread awareness on eliminating malnutrition and to encourage sports. I sincerely hope you would consider doing this in the coming months and motivate others to do the same.”
It is to be noted that Lakra Birendra recently announced his retirement from international hockey.
