PLGA week begins, high alert in Maoist-hit areas

Malkangiri/ Kandhamal: In the wake of People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) week, which began from today, the Odisha Police have sealed the border with the neighbouring State and sounded a high alert in the Maoist-hit districts across the state.

The Odisha Police deployed its elite anti-Maoist Special Operation Group, District Voluntary Force (DVF) and jawans of CRPF and BSF in the Maoist-hit districts like Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada and Kandhamal. The security personnel also intensified combing operations in several places in the state to check the Maoists’ activities.

Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena asserted that security has been beefed up in the cut off area of the district in view of the PLGA week.

“We have information about the Maoists’ activities in the cut-off area of the district and the joint anti-Maoist operations will continue in the district by the Central paramilitary forces and police,” he said.

According to sources, the State-run OSRTC Bus services have been suspended in various routes in Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Kandhamal districts as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the CPI Maoist group were seen appealing people to observe PLGA week to mark its foundation day from December 2-8.

Maoist posters have surfaced in different places in Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Kandhmal districts appealing locals to join the Maoist movement in large numbers.

Significantly, Maoists have set up a permanent camp in a remote area near Totaguda village of Jantri panchayat in Chitrakonda block in the tribal-dominated Malkangiri district.

The PLGA week is being observed since 2000 from the first anniversary of killing of three members of its Central committee members near Koyyuru forest area in Telangana on December 2, 1999.
