Balangir: Odisha DGP RP Sharma on Wednesday confirmed that Punjilal Meher, lecturer of Bhainsa College, has been arrested for allegedly masterminding the Patnagarh wedding gift blast.

Sharma said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch which visited Raipur in Chhattisgarh to question Skyking Courier staff got vital leads of Punjilal’s involvement in the crime.

Manager of the Raipur-based courier identified Punjilal Meher. Besides, the courier bill has been recovered from Punjilal’s house, added Sharma.

He will be forwarded to the court later today, informed the top cop of the state.

The probe agency arrested Meher after interrogating him for three consecutive days.

After getting some vital leads and suspecting his involvement in the case, the officials of the Crime Brach had raided Meher’s paternal house in Rampur day before yesterday and seized gun powder.

The Crime Branch sleuths had intensified their investigation into the case and detained seven persons including two lecturers of Bhainsa College and Skyking Courier owner yesterday. They were questioned at the Circuit House in Balangir.

The seven persons whom the probe agency had detained were identified as Punjilal and Shiv Shaw, the two lecturers of the college, Skyking Courier owner Dilip Das and the courier boy Sushant Seth, Umesh Matari, Chandramani Meher and Baibhasuta Bindhani.

During the questioning, Baibhasuta of Komna had made an important revelation saying along with his father he was arrested in 2011 for running illegal gun factory. Besides, a murder case is also pending against him.

The investigating agency had also interrogated the deceased bridegroom Soumya Sekhar Sahu’s parents many times earlier.

The Crime Branch officials had also interrogated Meher and Sekhar’s mother, who also works in the same college, face to face after knowing that there was a fight between both of them as  Sanjukta Sahu had taken over the post of college Principal which earlier Punjilal had held despite being junior to her. This apparently prompted him to mastermind the crime.

Soumya and Reema Sahu had married on February 18. Five days later, they received a parcel as marriage gift, which when they opened, exploded. Soumya and his grandmother Jemamani were killed due to the blast while Reema had sustained grievous burn injuries throughout her body. Initially, she was admitted to Balangir hospital. But, later she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Reema was discharged from the hospital on April 12.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had earlier visited Raipur in Chhattisgarh and grilled the owner of the Sky King Courier service and got to know that the wedding gift sender was communicating both in Hindi and Odia.
