Paradip boat capsize: Death toll reaches to 9, CM announces ex-gratia

Paradip: The death toll in the boath capsize which took place in Mahanadi River confluence near Nipania in Kendrapara district last evening, reached to 9 this morning with the rescuers recovering the bodies this morning.

The nine deceased persons included seven children and two women. They have been identified as Prabhati Swain (32), Anu Tarai (29), Ayush Tarai (4), Debasis Sahoo (8), Rosy Sahoo (14), Dhuna Sahoo (8), Ishani Dalai (3), Pinu Swain (5), and Khusi Pani (4).

The Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF)  personnel, firefighters, local administration along with some fishermen who were engaged in the rescue operation are still carrying out the operation to trace the other person (six-year-old Subhashree Swain) who is still missing.

Meanwhile, expressing his deep grief over the incident, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to next of kin of each deceased persons. Besides, he directed the concerned officials to provide free medical treatment to the injured.

Notably, a boat, ferrying around 55 picnickers of Ratanpur area of Kujang Tehsil, overturned when some people stood on the boat while the sailor had gone to attend nature’s call. The boat overturned while it was ferrying them from Hukitola Lighthouse to Kujang area of Paradip.
