Para-athlete Kamala Kanta Nayak sets Guinness World Record for the maximum distance covered on a wheelchair

Bhubaneswar: Para-athlete Kamala Kanta Nayak, a resident of Puri in Odisha has set a new Guinness World Record for the maximum distance covered on a wheelchair.

Kamala Kanta Nayak created the Guinness World Record for the maximum distance covered on a wheelchair by covering a distance of 215.4 kilometre in 24 hours.

Mario Trinidad of Portugal set the record after covering 182.4 km (113.34 miles) at the Vila Real Stadium in Vila Real, Portugal, on 3-4 December 2007.

The 28-year-old began his journey from Raj Mahal Square in Bhubaneswar yesterday. He used the 680 metre-long cycle track between Raj Mahal Square and Master Canteen Square.

While speaking to the media persons after setting the new record, Kamala Kanta said, “I am speechless to express how I feel right now. I was confident of breaking the old record within 23 hours. However, I could do it just in 22 hours.”

“Several people have helped and supported me in reaching this stage. However, I give credit to Durgabhai, PP Mohanty sir and S Vaidyanathan sir for this achievement,” he added.

When asked about his future aim, he said that my favourite game is marathon and so will take part in wheelchair marathon in the Olympics in the future.

The Sports Department of Government of Odisha and Better Life Foundation have supported Kamala Kanta in this unique attempt.

Kamal Kanta first participated in The Ability Marathon, in Kalinga Stadium conducted by the Social Security & Empowerment of Persons With Disabilities Department (SSEPD) Department, the government of Odisha. Thereafter, he started participating in a different marathons across India.

Kamal Kanta is the only Indian who completed a wheelchair ultra-marathon of 139.57 km in 15 hours. He is also 16 times half-marathon runner – (21 km), 13 times full marathon runner – (42 km) and Captain of the Odisha Wheelchair Basketball Team. He also has a record-setting journey of over 4200 km on a wheelchair in the year 2020.
