Cuttack: In a crackdown on corrupt officials in the district, Vigilance sleuths yesterday caught a Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) in Banki Tehsil red-handed while taking bribe from a Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) beneficiary.
The accused has been identified as Bipin Chandra Mantri, PEO, Dampara.
The anti-graft officials swung into action and initiated steps against Mantri after one Santosh Barik filed a case against him a few days back. In his complaint to the Cuttack Vigilance unit Santosh, who happens to be a PMAY beneficiary mentioned that Mantri demanded a sum of Rs 5000 as bribe to release second phase instalment money in the name of his mother.
After laying a trap the Vigilance team arrested Mantri from his office while taking bribe and later conducted a raid at his residence also.
