Over 9 lakh suspect cash seized from 2 cars in Rourkela

Rourkela: Launching a crackdown on illegal cash flow ahead of the polls, Election Commission’s static surveillance team seized cash worth over Rs 9 lakh during separate raids in Rourkela of Sundergarh district last night.

In the first incident, the team which was on election duty detained a car at Ambagan Chhak and conducted search of it. Around Rs 6 lakh in cash were seized from the vehicle in the presence of a Magistrate.

During interrogation, the owner of the vehicle, a timber trader failed to justify the source of the money.

Later, the static surveillance team detained another four-wheeler at Kumujharia on Kuarmunda-Biramitrapur road and recovered Rs 3.20 lakh cash from its owner, one Taufiq Ansari of neighbouring Jharkhand State.

In both the cases, the owners of the vehicles have been directed by the nodal officer to submit necessary documents and further investigation is underway.
