Kandhamal: Coming down heavily on the illegal hemp growers and exporters in the district, Kandhamal Police seized over 30 kg of hemp in a Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) bus near Gochhapada today morning and arrested two persons.
While the arrested persons include the driver and conductor of the bus, police have not disclosed their identity yet.
The raid was conducted after Gochhapada Police found specific information on the hemp transportation in a government bus early in the morning. Acting upon the tip-off, a police team under Gochhapada IIC Mrutyunjay Pradhan intercepted the Pahiraju-Phulbani OSRTC bus at around 8.30 AM in the morning and carried out a search. During the search, sacks carrying over 30 kg of hemp were found kept inside the vehicle and were seized.
“While the exact cost of the seized hemp is yet to be assessed, it could be well around Rs 1 lakh,” said Pradhan.
“The arrested driver and conductor are currently being quizzed to find out whether any drug racket is behind the hemp transport or not,” he added.
