Cuttack: The protesting lawyers of the Orissa High Court (HC) on Monday called off their relay hunger strike after Chief Justice Vineet Saran assured to take action for filling up of vacant judges’ posts in the HC, informed Bar Association President Srikant Nayak.

“The Chief Justice today held a discussion with us and assured to send a list of names to the Supreme Court collegium by March 31 for the appointment of Judges in the High Court,” Nayak told Kalinga TV.

“All the lawyers of the High Court will join their work from tomorrow”, he added.

“We will however resume our agitation activities if no action will be taken by March 31 in this connection,” the senior lawyer warned.

At present, the HC is functioning with just 16 Judges out of the sanctioned strength of 27 Judges. Moreover, there have been no appointments here since May 2015.

The lawyers were boycotting courts since February 12 and were on relay hunger strike from February 19 to press their demand for immediate appointment of Judges to fill up vacant posts.
