Dhenkanal: A man was trampled to death in elephant attack at Baliakiri village under Hindol forest range in Dhenkanal district last night.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Rout.
Sources said, Sanjay and a group of men had gone to chase the elephant herd when they were informed about the elephants damaging the crops.
Fortunately, others escaped from the clutches of the elephants, but Sanjay was attacked by an elephant and sustained serious injuries. He later succumbed in Dhenkanal District Headquarters hospital (DHH).
The frequent attacks by pachyderms triggered resentment among local villagers who demanded immediate steps to chase away the herd creating havoc in the area.
Panic has spread among villagers as the elephant herd has been damaging crops and houses and has taken lives in the area.
