Olive ridleys create all-time record with over 4 lakh nesting in Rushikulya

Berhampur: The olive ridley turtles created all-time record with over 4 lakh nesting at the Rushikulya rookery this year.

According to Berhampur divisional forest officer Ashis Behera, 4,28,083 mother olive ridley turtles’ nesting were seen at the Rushikulya rookery coast in the Ganjam district. As many as 3,65,000 olive ridley turtles had created a record of mass nesting on the site last year.

Behera said that the mass nesting of the endangered species is expected to continue for another two to three days.

The turtles have also extended their area of mass nesting northward till the Bateswar temple this year, added Behera.

Interestingly, the mass nesting of olive ridley turtles has not yet started on two other major nesting sites in the state namely Gahirmatha beach and the mouth of the Debi river.
