Kendrapara: The periodical nesting of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles have started at Gahirmatha beach in Kendrapara.
Reportedly, a number of eggs have been recorded in one day.
The Olive Ridley sea turtles have come from Jaffna peninsula along the North West coast of Sri Lanka, and started mass nesting from midnight of March 25.
According to the forest department, on March 26 a total of 2,45,188 eggs were laid and on the March 27 1,84,994 eggs were laid.
The mass nesting of the Olive Ridley from the beginning of this year have made the environmentalists delighted.
As many as 50 officials from Rajnagar Forest Department and 20 officials from Bhadrak Forest Department have been deployed to protect the turtles’ eggs.
In addition, a separate segment has been set up in the low lying area within a 3-km radius from Wheeler Island in Bhadrak.
