Oil tanker-truck catch fire after head-on crash, 4 critical

Angul: At least four persons were critically injured after an oil tanker caught fire following a head-on collision with a truck on NH-55 near Ranibhuin under Kishorenagar Tehsil in the district on Saturday.

While the injured are drivers and helpers of both the vehicles, their identity has not have been ascertained so far.

The mishap took place at around 5.30 AM in the morning while the oil tanker was on its way to Sambalpur with a diesel consignment. Driver of a speeding truck lost control over his vehicle and ended up dashing against the tanker. The tanker caught fire immediately following the collision due to the presence of the highly inflammable material and the flames caught the truck subsequently. Both the vehicles were reduced to fire in minutes.

While four persons were rescued from the burning vehicles by some locals, they were rushed to Angul DHH in critical condition. One of the critical was later shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack.

Two Fire Brigade teams from Angul and Kishorenagar reached the spot and doused the fire after a Herculean effort of two hours.

Vehicular movement on the NH was disrupted for almost four hours due to the accident.
