Odisha: Woman delivers baby in auto rickshaw as ambulance fails to reach village

Nabarangpur:  A tribal woman in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district has delivered a baby boy in an auto rickshaw on her way to hospital as ambulance failed to reach her village due to poor road connectivity.

The incident occurred in Dokrikote village of Jharigam block in the district when Sebati Majhi, wife of Padu Majhi of the village, suffered labour pain on Monday morning.

Her family members called the 102 ambulance service to take her to the hospital, but it didn’t turn up due to poor road connectivity to the village. The condition of the road is so bad that even an auto rickshaw couldn’t turn up the village.

The aggrieved family had no other choice except to carry Sebati on a cot for nearly five kilometres up to Jadamba Chhak, where they found an auto rickshaw to take her Ichhapur Primary Health Centre.

Sebati delivered a baby boy in the autorickshaw.  Later, both the mother and newborn baby were taken to the health centre. Their condition is reportedly stable.

It is not an isolated case; a number of such cases have been reported in the tribal-dominated Nabarangpur district in the recent past when pregnant women had to be carried in bicycles or cots to the nearest health centres as 102 ambulance did not turn up in time citing various reasons.
