Supreme Court on Mining

Bhubaneswar: The State Government, on Monday, issued notices to 152 defaulting mining lease holders for illegal mining and mining without mandatory environmental clearances. Acting on the Supreme Court directive, the State has asked the mining leaseholders to pay the penalty by December 31.

The mining leaseholders will have to pay 100 per cent of the cost of minerals extracted beyond limits and for flouting environmental norms as per Supreme Court order in August this year. In Koida region, 47 mining lease holders have been directed to pay penalty.

For the calculation purpose, the State Government has to adhere to the valuation made by the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) appointed by the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the State Government and BJP had entered into a war of words after the former fixed the penalty amount at Rs 17.576.16 crore instead of Rs 59,000 crore for which it served notices on the errant mining companies in 2012.
