Odisha: Pregnant woman carried on shoulder in Nabarangpur

Nabarangpur:  A group of women carried a pregnant woman on their shoulders for one km in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district yesterday as ambulance failed to reach the village due to the poor muddy road.

The incident occurred in Tarajodi village under Jharigam block in the district when Sunamani Harijan, wife of Mahon Harijan of the village, complained labour pain.

After getting a call, the 108 ambulance service came but couldn’t reach the village due to the muddy road. It was forced to stop near Sirsaguda, around three km away from the village.

Later, the family members arranged an auto-rickshaw to take Sunamani near the ambulance. However, the auto-rickshaw also stopped midway due to knee-high muddy road.

The women, who were accompanying Sunamani, had no other choice except to carry her on their shoulders for one kilometre to catch the ambulance.

After getting the ambulance, Sunamani was taken to Jharigam Community Health Centre in the district, where she delivered a baby boy. The condition of both mother and newborn baby is reportedly stable.
