Berhampur: Hundreds of students of Berhampur University had a narrow escape after a portion of the Saberi ladies hostel collapsed this afternoon. The inmates of the hostel which was built in 1989 have been asked to vacate the hostel immediately.
Eyewitnesses said that a large portion of the hostel building crashed in the afternoon. “We were lucky as all of us have been to classes. The hostel has remained in a dilapidated condition for the past few years,” said a student.
University authorities said that the hostel has a sanctioned strength of 160. “We have earlier planned to repair the hostel after the Monsoon. We have also asked the boarders to vacate the hostel immediately,” said an official.
