Odisha Police records highest number of seizure this year under NDPS Act

Bhubaneswar: In a major achievement, Odisha Police has recorded the highest numbers of seizure under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, cases this year till September, revealed a press note.

Odisha police registered 38 cases regarding illicit cultivation of Cannabis and plantation of Cannabis in 4632 acres of land was destructed during the crop year 2017-18. This is the record destruction by the state police as compared to previous years.

The state police had destructed plantation of Cannabis in 3599 acres in 2016-17 and 2457.7 acres in 2015-16, while it was 3933.8 acres in 2014-15.

Due to the proactive initiative of the Superintendents of Police of the Western Odisha districts, the illicit cultivation of Cannabis has been drastically reduced in Angul, Sambalpur and Deogarh districts. Maximum illicit cultivation of Cannabis was destructed from Kandhamal district (2424 Acre’s), Boudh (840 Acres), Gajapati district( 771 Acres) during the year 2017-18, the press note said.

In 2018, Odisha Police has seized 67 quintals of ganja under the detection of NDPS Act cases against the annual seizure of 304.3 quintals in 2017, 428.84 quintals of 2016 and 198.12 quintals in 2015.

Besides, seizure of Brown Sugar in the State in 2018 has also increased than previous years. 915.5 gms of Brown Sugar has been seized in 2018 against 411.51gms in 2017 and 704.44gms of 2016 and 810grns Heroin and 04gms Brown Sugar in 2015.

As many as 115 vehicles including 11 trucks, 2 three-wheelers, 55 two-wheelers, and 47 four-wheelers have been seized from accused persons in 2018 against 138 vehicles in 2017, 116 vehicles in 2016 and 84 vehicles in 2015.

Besides, cash of Rs 12 lakhs has been seized in 2018 against the annual seizure of Rs 2.31 lakhs in 2017, Rs 3.08 lakhs in 2016 and Rs11.30 lakhs in 2015.

Odisha Police has arrested 668 accused persons including 24 women in 435 cases in 2018. Similarly, during 2017, 571 cases have been lodged against 548 in 2016 and 517 cases in 2015.
