Odisha Panchayat Elections: State Election Commission calls meeting to discuss polls

Bhubaneswar: The sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Odisha has raised the question of whether or not to hold the State Panchayat Election. Due to this surge in Covid cases, State Election Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi has called an important meeting today to discuss the same.

Reportedly, the meeting will be held at 11 am which will be attended by Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra and Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena.

It is also learnt that Additional Chief Secretary of Health & Family Welfare Department Raj Kumar Sharma will be present in the meeting today.

This comes after a day when the State reported 2703 Covid positives. Khordha district recorded the highest with 926 covid positive cases, followed by Sundargarh with 454, Cuttack with 191, Sambalpur with 179, and Jharsuguda with 106 positives.

It is to be noted that most district administrations have submitted their respective final voter list to Election Commission. The Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha released the final voter list on January 6. The Election Commission has also called for an all-party meeting on January 10.
