Odisha Panchayat Elections: Dates for polls likely to be announced today

Bhubaneswar: The State Election Commission is likely to announce the dates for three-tier Panchayat elections in Odisha today.

Earlier on Monday, the election commission sought opinions of the political parties on the issue of panchayat polls in all-party meeting that was held at at Toshali Bhawan.

During the all party meeting, some parties said that the panchayat elections should be postponed due to the current Covid situation in the State.

The state election commission has planned to hold panchayat elections in the state following the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for assembly elections to be held in five states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand, said reports.

The State Election Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi also met the governor, Chief Secretary, the Health Secretary and the Special Relief Commissioner on Monday to discuss regarding the same.

Odisha Government has already issued gazette notifications calling upon the three tier panchayati raj institutions to elect people’s representatives to the posts of ward members, sarpanchs, panchayat samiti and zilla parishad members.
