Odisha Mahila Congress activists hurl eggs, tomatoes at Maharathy’s residence; 40 held

Bhubaneswar: Intensifying its protest against Odisha Agriculture and Panchayati Raj Minister Pradeep Maharathy over his remark on Pipili gang rape and murder verdict, the Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress today hurled eggs and tomatoes at his government residence and clashed with police.

The incident took place in the noon, soon after hundreds of members of the women wing of Odisha Congress gathered before Maharathy’s house and resorted to sloganeering by holding brooms and tried to barge into it. As the police officials prevented the protesters they entered into a scuffle with them.

Mahila Congress activists demanded apology and immediate step down of the Agriculture Minister from his post for the irresponsible remark.

Later, the Commissionerate Police took at least 40 protesters into preventive custody from the spot to contain the disturbance.

Notably, Bhubaneswar District and Sessions Judge Court acquitted the prime accused of Pipili gang rape and murder case of 2011, Prashant Pradhan and his brother Sukant due to lack of evidence. They had been booked under Sections 341, 307, 376 and 506 of the IPC and Section 3 of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act.

The next day in his remark to media persons Maharathy said, though he had sympathies with the victim still he honours the court’s judgement. He also added that, he had claimed previously that the truth will prevail.
