liquor traderJagatsinghpur: An illegal liquor trader was publicly shamed by Jhansi Rani Mahila Mahasangh, a women anti-liquor brigade at Gadaharishpur village under Ersama police limits, on Tuesday. The trader was garlanded with shoes by the women and taken around on a parade through the village for running a liquor manufacturing unit.

Reports say the trader, identified as Maheshwar Jena, was running a liquor manufacturing unit in Gadaharishpur village for the last couple of months despite repeated warnings by the all-women anti-liquor brigade. The exasperated members of the Jhansi Rani Mahila Mahasangh, which aims at keeping the area free of liquor, hatched a plan to teach Maheshwar a lesson today. As part of the plan, hundreds of women from the Mahasangh barged into Maheshwar’s manufacturing unit and ransacked it completely. They also seized several items kept inside for production of liquor.

Later, the women dragged Maheshwar out of his unit, put a shoe-garland around his neck, blackened his face and paraded him through the village.

Briefing on their action, the members of the Jhansi Rani Mahila Mahasangh claimed that the Excise Department as well was the local police were not taking any action against the liquor trader despite a number of complaints filed against him. Suspecting a nexus between police and the liquor trader, the Mahasangh took the step, they quipped.
