Odisha Landslide: MCL Announces Compensation, Job For Deceased’s Kin

Angul: The authorities of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) today announced Rs 30 lakh compensation for the families of each victim who died in the landslide in Bharatpur on July 23.

The MCL authorities also assured a contractual job for one member of each family. Sources said that the job will be regularised in one month.

As many as four persons had died in the mishap when a portion of earth broke loose trapping 13 workers and machinery at work at the open cast mine of MCL in Bharatpur.

In related development locals, who were on agitation since July 24 demanding a safety inspection of entire Talcher coalfields along with a high-level probe into the incident withdrew the strike today after a meeting with Angul district administration and authorities of MCL. The locals also demanded adequate compensation to the families of the deceased.

Several power plants depending on the Talcher coalfields have faced a shortage of coal for power production in the wake of the strike. The power plants are likely to start normal production after the announcement of the compensation package.
