Odisha: IPL betting racket busted in Malkangiri; 4 arrested, Rs 27 lakh seized

Malkangiri: Police on Friday has busted an IPL betting racket in Malkangiri and arrested four persons in this connection. A total of Rs 27 lakhs has been seized from the possession of these arrested persons.

Acting under a tip-off, the Malkangiri police conducted a raid on suspected houses and arrested four persons (bookies) in connection to betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. It is noteworthy to mention that the accused were nabbed while they were betting during the final match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Out of the total Rs 27 lakh seized during the raid, Rs 9 lakh was in cash and Rs 18 lakh was from the bookies’ bank passbooks. Mobile phones, ATM cards and other electronic gadgets used for betting were also seized from their possession. The crime has its roots in Chhattisgarh, revealed the Police.

While the arrested persons have been forwarded to court, the cops have clarified that they were middle bookies and took commission up to 30 per cent of a single transaction. The main bookies involved in the racket are yet to be found and arrested.
