Odisha inks MoU with Earth Networks for Lightning alerts

Bhubaneswar: In a major development, the Government of Odisha on Wednesday signed an MoU with US based company-“Earth Networks” for installing lightning censors across the state.

Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) Managing Director Bishnupada Sethi signed the MoU with Earth Networks official here in the presence of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Maheswar Mohanty for setting up of lightning detection and warning system, which will alert lightning strike before 45 minutes of the occurrence.

“Över 400 people have been killed in lightning strikes in the state this year”, said the Disaster Management Minister. “With the help of the lighting sensor s, we will be able to alert the people about early warning of lightening through mass messaging and mobile-based application.”

The development will certainly help to reduce death toll due to the lightning in the state, the Minister claimed.

Earth Networks is currently working with over 1,800 sensors in nearly 50 countries around the world.
