Odisha House Panel to table report on Abhijit Iyer Mitra row in Assembly tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: The House Committee of Odisha Assembly which was formed by the Speaker to probe into the breach of privilege allegation leveled against arrested journalist Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, will table its report at the State Assembly tomorrow.

Chairman of the House Committee and Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra, after chairing a meeting of the Committee today, informed that it will submit the probe report on the first day of the winter session of the State Assembly starting tomorrow.

Speaking about the report, “The report comprises all the statements recorded and deposition by all the persons examined related to the case.” “Including today’s meeting, the House Committee had six sittings on the case,” he added.

Abhijit was arrested by the Commissionerate police on October 23 in connection with a criminal case filed against him at the Saheed Nagar Police Station in Bhubaneswar under sections 294, 295A, 153A, 500, 506 of IPC and section 67 of the Information Technology Act over his derogatory remarks against the world famous Konark Sun Temple and Odisha.

On September 16, Abhijit had posted a video on Twitter making derogatory remarks on the Sun Temple in Konark while being present at the spot.

Konark police had taken him on a remand after his arrest.

The controversial scribe had, earlier in the month, appeared before the House Committee for the third time and submitted an affidavit over his derogatory remarks in presence of the House Committee Chairman and member Sanjay Das Burma at the Odisha Assembly building. Besides, he had tendered an unconditional apology over the matter on October 23.

Currently, he is lodged in Jharpada jail.
