Odisha Gram Panchayat workers turn beggars to press demandBhubaneswar: In a bid to press their demands, the members of Odisha Gram Panchayat Union resorted to a unique way of demonstration at Lower PMG Square here on Saturday. On the sixth day of their agitation, they were seen rolling on the road with plates begging.

The employees of 6,365 Gram Panchayats which included peons, sweepers and night watchers are demanding for regularisation of their job and salary hike.

“I have been working for the last 40 years. I began my job only with Rs 150 and now getting Rs 1,500 which is not enough for anything. I am unable to run the family with this small amount of salary. Time and again we demanded for the hike of our salary, regularisation of our job and on time salary. However, the state government is not taking any step to fulfill our demands,” said a protester.

They alleged that the little salary that they get are not given on time and threatened to kill themselves if the state government fails to address their demands.

“We are getting very less salary which is as equal to not getting anything as the payment is made either after six months or even after a year. We are not able to get proper food or clothes. We are here on the road for the last six days to press our long standing demands. If the state government does not take any action to address our issues, we will do mass self-immolation,” threatened a lady protester.
