Odisha Govt To Provide 1 Kg Ragi At Re 1 To PDS Cardholders

Bhubaneswar: In order to improve the pattern of nutritional consumption of people, the Odisha Government will distribute 1 kg of ragi (Mandia) at Re 1 through the public distribution system (PDS).

The decision was taken at the Odisha Millet Mission meeting, held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi on Monday.

As per the decision, every PDS cardholder in Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nuapada and Rayagada districts will get one kg of ragi at Re. 1 in July.

In Malkangiri district, the cardholders will be supplied two kgs of ragi at subsidised rate.

For the pilot project, the State Government has also decided to procure around 100,000 quintals of ragi from farmers in the coming Kharif season at the minimum support price of Rs. 2,897 per quintal.

Padhi said the main objective of the scheme is to provide a good market price to the ragi farmers and eliminate distress sale.

He also asked the Millet Mission to take initiatives for promoting the consumption of ragi in urban pockets through tie-ups with bakeries, biscuits manufacturers, sweet stalls and giant retailers.
