Odisha Govt forms inter-ministerial committee to address farmers’ issues

Bhubaneswar: With a large number of farmers marching to Bhubaneswar to stage a demonstration demanding ‘price, prestige and pension’, the Government of Odisha on Monday formed an inter-ministerial committee to address the demands of agitating farmers.

The three-member inter-ministerial committee will be headed by Finance Minister Shashi Bhusan Behera.

Agriculture & Panchayatiraj Minister Pradeep Moharathy and Cooperative Minister Surjya Narayan Patro are other members of the committee.

The committee will prepare terms of reference to discuss the demands of the agitating farmers, Finance Minister informed.

“Odisha government stands committed to the cause of the farmers’ welfare. Our government has consistently been proactive for the cause of the farmers and development of agriculture in the state,” he said.

Meanwhile, the farmers advancing towards the State capital on the NH 16 to attend a mega convention at Lower PMG were clashed with the security personnel at Tamando on outskirts of the city today.

On the other hand, the farmers approaching Bhubaneswar from Cuttack were also near Hansapal area of the city.

The administration has clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code at Hansapal and Tamando to stall the protest.

Notably, the hundreds of farmers from across the state under the banner of Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan were scheduled to attend a mega convention at Lower PMG today to press their demand of ‘price, prestige and pension’.
