Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Saturday extended summer vacations in view of the intense heat wave across the state.

School and Mass Education Department Secretary Pradipta Mohapatra informed that the schools will reopen on June 21 due to sudden rise in temperature. Earlier the schools were to be reopened on June 18.

The Southwest Monsoon had reached Odisha on June 8 – two days ahead of the scheduled date. However, hot and humid weather conditions prevailed in the state as the monsoon weakened. Eight places in the state recorded 40 degree Celsius temperature yesterday.

Meanwhile, the city-based regional meteorological department has predicted that such hot condition will continue for at least one week.

Notably, both the government and private schools were shut from April 25 after temperature continued to hover above 40 degrees Celsius across the state.
