Odisha Govt Approves Special Courts For Trial Of Honour Killing Cases

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has green-signalled the setting up of two special courts in the state for trail of criminal cases related to Honour Killing.

According to an official notification of the Home Department, SDJM Court of Nabarangpur and the Court of Second Additional District & Sessions Judge, Berhampur will serve as special courts to deal with cases related to Honour Killing and violence to couples in their respective jurisdiction.

In August this year, the Odisha Government had declared that trial of honour killing cases will be done by specified designated courts or fast track courts on a day to day basis. The cases will be concluded within six months.

The Supreme Court, in a judgment in March this year, put in place a slew of preventive, remedial and punitive guidelines against khap panchayats and communal assemblies that target inter-caste and inter-religious couples.

Adhering to the Supreme Court order on honour killing, the Odisha home department had laid down guidelines for combating the menace and asked top officers to take serious action against those found guilty of the crime.
