Odisha: Emar Mutt demolition begins in Puri

Puri: The district administration has begun the process of demolition of Emar Mutt belonging to Ramanuj sect, one of the oldest and the richest mutts of Puri in Odisha, amid tight security.

The famous Raghunandan Library on the first floor of the mutt was demolished on Wednesday.

The heritage library was established in 1921 by the then ‘mahant’ of the Emar Mutt. It had a rare collection of palm leaf manuscripts and books on various subjects in Sanskrit, Odia and Bengali languages.

Collector Balwant Singh told media that all books, manuscripts and furniture of the library have been shifted to a Government building on the collectorate campus here.

24 platoons of police along with Snake Helpline officials have been deployed at the site.

As many as seven mutts situated inside 75 meters from Jagannath Temple and also declared unsafe are to be demolished as part of the ongoing demolition drive here to make the holy city a world-class heritage centre.
