Odisha: Elephant calf dies after falling into trench near railway track

Sundergarh: An elephant calf died after falling into a trench, reportedly dug by Railways Department, near Mahipani under Bisra forest range in Sundargarh district late last night.

According to reports, the incident occurred after the elephant calf accidentally fell into the trench beside the railway track near the village. Locals claimed that the trench was dug by the Railways department to construct new tracks.

On being informed, the forest department officials reached the spot and recovered the carcass of the elephant at around 3 AM today.

Forest officials said, the baby elephant would be around one year old. The calf was a part of an elephant herd roaming near the Mahipani level crossing around 11.30 PM, Officials added.

Meanwhile, the carcass of the elephant has been sent to a veterinary hospital for autopsy test. Forest officials began an investigation into the matter.
