Odisha: Dreaded criminal Bijay Nayak injured in police encounter

Kendrapara: Dreaded criminal Bijay Nayak, who was involved in the murder of gangster Sheikh Suleiman in 2009, was injured in a police encounter on NH 5 near Kajalagada in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Wednesday.

The criminal, who sustained bullet injury in his left leg, was initially rushed to the District Headquarter Hospital here and later shifted to S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.

Based on a tip-off about Bijay’s presence in Kajalagada area, a combined team of Kendrapara Sadar police and special squad swung into action and raided the place. Seeing the cop, Bijay opened fire at them in a bid to escape. In retaliation, the police too fired and Bijay was hit in his leg.

Bijay was on the run since long and was living under a false identity. He has changed his name as Ganesh Das in his Aadhaar card and other identity cards.

More than 100 criminal cases including murder, extortion, robbery etc. have been registered against Bijay at different police stations in the state, police said.
