Odisha Crime Branch registers murder case against 4 police personnel

Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch of Odisha registered murder case against four police personnel in connection with a custodial death of an accused in 2017. Crime Branch Addl. SP, Ramachandra Thamb will be leading the investigation team, Crime Branch ADG Sanjeeb Panda

The four police personnel includes Jeypore police station’s former IIC Tapan Narayan Rath, SIs Siba Prasad Sahu and Rajesh Baliarsingh and former SDPO Rajendra Prasad Senapati.

Reportedly, Akash Mahuriam, who was wanted in some offences, was allegedly tortured and murdered inside Jeypore Town police station in Koraput district on January 30, 2017.

Following which the police had attributed Mahuria’s death to an accidental fall while chasing to arrest him. However, the family of Akash Mahuria had lodged a complaint and alleged that he has been killed.

Recently, deceased Akash Mahuria’s mother Prabina Mahuria had lodged a complaint with the Crime Branch against the four police officers and alleged that on January 30, 2017 between 12 noon to 1 pm, IIC Tapan Naayan Rath along with S.I. Siba Prasad Sahu and 20 to 30 numbers of Police Personnel with uniform apprehended Akash and assaulted him by means of slaps and kicks and threatened to kill him.

They forcibly lifted him in Police Jeep to Jeypore police station and confined him in Police hazat, beaten severely resulting death while in custody.

The four police officers have been booked under sections 302, 323, 342, 325, 505 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
