Bhawanipatna: A couple, who was taking a morning walk, was killed after being hit by an unknown vehicle on NH-26 near Ghulijiba Chhak in Dharamgarh area of Odisha’s Kalahandi district on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Chandradhwaja Bemal and his wife Kalabati Bemal of Mahichala village under Junagarh police limits in the district.
According to reports, the couple was out for morning walk early in the morning when a speeding vehicle vehicle hit him and fled from the scene after the accident. They reportedly died on the spot.
The passersby spotted the couple lying in in a pool of blood on the NH and informed the family members of the deceased and others.
Irate over the incident, angry locals staged road blockade at the NH by burning tyres demanding adequate compensation for kin of the deceased.
Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on both sides of the road. Vehicular communication between Papadahandi and Bhawanipatna was affected.
On being informed, police reached the spot and tried to pacify the protestors.
Junagarh police registered a case against the unidentified vehicle owner and began investigation into the matter.
