Odisha CM urges PM Modi to pass Bill for women reservation in Parliament, Assemblies

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to take necessary steps in passing the Bill for one-third reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures.

In the letter, the Chief Minister assured full support from the State government in providing women with their rightful place in the decision-making process.

“I would like to request your good self to take the leadership in initiating necessary steps for passing the Bill for reservation of one-third of seats in Parliament and state legislatures for women,” said Patnaik.

The Chief Minister also maintained that Odisha is a pioneering State for empowering women in participatory democracy.

In the early 1990s, the legendary leader Biju Patnaik, for the first time in the country, brought women to the realm of political decision making by providing 33 per cent reservation for women in Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies across Odisha, Patnaik said.

Notably, Odisha Assembly recently adopted a unanimous resolution to provide one-third reservation for women in Parliament as well as in State Legislative Assemblies.
